BUSINESS PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX SERVICES

BPP is valued separately from real estate and may require different evidence (equipment lists, depreciation, etc.).

Business personal property (BPP) includes the tangible assets used to operate a business, such as furniture, fixtures, equipment, machinery, computers, leasehold improvements, and certain leased assets. In Texas, business personal property is subject to annual appraisalby the county appraisal district and may be protested when the appraised value is incorrect, unsupported, or inconsistently applied.

Texas True Tax assists business owners with reviewing, rendering, and protesting business personal property in accordance with the Texas Property Tax Code.

HOW TEXAS TRUE TAX HELPS

When engaged for business personal property services, Texas True Tax can assist with:

  • Reviewing business personal property renditions for accuracy and completeness
  • Assisting with the preparation and filing of renditions, when appropriate
  • Reviewing the appraisal district’s BPP valuation methodology
  • Preparing and filing the Notice of Protest and required supplemental forms
  • Organizing and presenting supporting documentation
  • Representing the business owner at informal meetings and Appraisal Review Board (ARB) hearings

Each account is reviewed individually, taking into account industry norms, depreciation practices, and county-specific appraisal methods.

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION WE MAY REQUEST

Documentation is requested only after engagement and only when relevant.

BUSINESSES WE COMMONLY ASSIST

Business personal property services are commonly provided for:

  • Art studios
  • Veterinary clinics and animal hospitals
  • Restaurants and locally owned food establishments
  • Professional offices (medical, dental, legal, and similar)
  • Retail businesses and small service providers
  • Warehouses and light industrial users

FEE STRUCTURE

Business personal property services are offered on a contingency or negotiated fee basis, depending on the scope and complexity of the account.

  • No upfront fee
  • A fee is earned only if a reduction results in tax savings
  • Fee terms are discussed prior to engagement

KEY DEADLINES

  • April 15: Deadline to file Business Personal Property renditions
  • May 15: General deadline to file a Notice of Protest
  • 30 days after notice: If the Notice of Appraised Value is delivered later, the protest deadline may extend to 30 days from delivery

Meeting these deadlines preserves protest rights and compliance with Texas appraisal procedures.

NEXT STEPS

If your business received a Notice of Appraised Value for business personal property and you believe the value is overstated or incorrect, Texas True Tax can assist with determining whether a protest or correction is appropriate under Texas law.
